Sabahan’s problems in Semananjung

Regarding the well being involving Sabahans in Semananjung who is either working, studying, residing, doing business or otherwise, there were recently some reports highlighting their various unfavorable and sad situation faced by our fellow Sabahan there. These reports had raised much attention among the Sabahan at home and they felt that there must be something needed to be done urgently to help them. Among these were our Sabahan had to sleep by road side, begging for food, seeking help from various charity homes, and worst of all the Sabah State government claimed that there were only 20 of them. This is not acceptable, we can not leave any one unattended to, let along there is more than 20 of them.

Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Dr. Hiew King Cheu has taken the initiative to arrange for a “Meet the Sabahan Session” in Kuala Lumpur to gather in a meeting arranged by the Pakatan Rakyat for the fellow Sabahan to listen to their problems and views over a wide range of matters faced by them. This is especially for the working young people from Sabah, for example on their problems associated with working condition, wages and salaries, dwelling, medical benefits, food, EPF, and others like social and living.

The date of the meeting has been changed to the 16th of May 2010 (Sunday), 2 to 5 pm at the Dewan Perhimpuan Cina, No.1, Jalan Maharajalela, Kuala Lumpur, Selangor. We welcome all the Sabahan to attend the meeting function and the leaders of Pakatan Rakyat (PR) like Dato’ Seri Anwar Ibrahim, Lim Kit Siang and the Chief Minister of Selangor Tan Sri Halid Ibrahim is expected to be present to listen to the various problem and request.

Sabah DAP is grateful to receive help from the many NGOs, churches, individuals from Kuala Lumpur. They have shown deep concern on the suffering of their fellow Sabahan in the Klang Valley. Most of these kind hearted people had helped many poor Sabahan out of trouble. Father Valentine Gompok is one of them who came originally from Tambunan and now stationed in a church in Cheras, KL. He had recently highlighted the cases in the Daily Express about the suffering of these poor souls in KL. Their stories were sad, sickening and untold. He even had helped young girls from Sabah who were pregnant and no way to turn to. Now there is some few hundreds young Sabahan are being taken care by him.

On the Deputy Chief Minister Datuk Pairin Joseph Kitingan’s call for the people in Tambunan not to seek opportunities in Semananjung seems a bit out of the way. He being the head of the KDMs (Hugguon Siou), the Sabah DCM, and a full Sabah minister of Infrastructure Development, a State Assemblyman for Tambunan, and a Member of Parliament for Keningau, has he failed his duties to bring about prosperity, upmost care and better living for the people in Tambunan and Keningau, who had supported him for the past few decades in Tambunan? Does he know that there are many of his fellow country men are facing hardship in KL and the reason why they go so far away from home to earn a living, and the number of these people there?

If Datuk Pairin Kitingan advises the Tambunan people don’t choose to work away from Tambunan and go so far to work in KL, what plan has he planned and installed for them that can provide job securities and good benefits in the long run for them in Tambunan. The poor people here definitely want to know, because no one likes to stay away from home and get stranded in a strange place. It has been many times since year 2000 announced by the BN government to eradicate hardcore poverty and achieve Zero poverty, what happen now? Can the government achieve ‘Zero Poverty’ by end of this year? If this cannot be done, more Sabahan will go away to work else way especially from the poor interior districts.
