The Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Hiew King Cheu with Sabah DAP Vice chairman cum Local government and housing bureau chief Edward Ewol Mujie with DAP leaders during the CNY greeting visit to the Delta Light Industrial Estate in Kolombong next to the Kolombong Bomba, found that the infrastructure facilities of the light industrial estate is in a deploring and disastrous condition.

A Mr. Chong who owns two of the units here complained to Hiew and Edward that the whole area was left in its bad condition and literally being forgotten by the DBKK and other authorities for a long time. Now they are lucky that the KK MP and the DAPs have visited the area and there will be hope that the DBKK will come to do what they supposedly had done many years ago. The people here said they are rates payers too and they deserve the same attention from the DBKK.

MCA is hypocritical in its attacks against PAS, when it is UMNO which poses the greatest threat to religious freedom and individual liberties in Malaysia

Media statement by Tony Pua Kiam Wee in Labis on Thursday, 27th January 2011:

MCA President Dr Chua Soi Lek and other MCA leaders have gone on a rampage against PAS, arguing that a vote for PAS will mean the end to religious freedom for the non-Muslim community and individual liberties in the country.

Dr Chua has gone to the extent of arguing that while "UMNO is not perfect, it has corruption", it is still a better choice than PAS for the latter's religious principles.

The MCA President's statement is only half-correct for not only is UMNO corrupt, it abuses Islam as a political tool to promote extremism, ultra-conservatism to spread fear among Malays against non-Malays and non-Muslims. Dr Chua has intentionally chosen to turn a blind eye on the fact that UMNO's attempts to curtail non-Muslim rights far exceed anything PAS has to offer.

Over the past 2 years, we saw how UMNO attempted to monopolise the use of "Allah" for Muslims only and prevent Malay-speaking Christians and Sikhs from using the term for their religious prayers. The UMNO-led BN government, of which MCA is an integral part of, has chosen to fight the Catholic Church in court to restrict the freedom of the latter's community. This is despite the fact that the term "Allah" is used by even Christian Arabs and Jews in the Middle East for centuries, commonly regarded as the home of Islam.

The Penang State Government will increase its annual allocation to Chinese Primary & Secondary schools and Missionary School from RM 5.8 million in 2010 to RM 6.5 million this year

Media statement by Lim Guan Eng in Penang on Wednesday, 26th January 2011:

The Penang Pakatan Rakyat State Government will increase the annual allocation of partially assisted schools to the Chinese primary (SRJK (C) ), Chinese secondary (SMJK (C)) and Missionary schools from RM5.8 million in 2010 to RM6.5 million in 2011.

Since coming to power in March 2008, the Penang Pakatan Rakyat State Government has started the "institutional allocation" to Private schools, Chinese primary schools, Chinese Secondary schools, Missionary schools and Religious Schools (Sekolah Agama Rakyat).

Penang currently has a total of 124 schools under the category of Chinese Primary, Chinese Secondary and Missionary Schools. Since not all schools in these categories have submitted their applications, the number of schools receiving allocations will vary from year to year.

Under the institutional allocation system, the Penang Pakatan Rakyat State Government has given out RM 4.5 million to 109 schools under this category in year 2009. Whilst in year 2010, the state has increased the budget from RM 4.5 million in 2009 to RM 5.8 million which has benefited 120 schools who applied. 2011 will see an increase of RM700,000 to RM 6.5 million.

Sabah DAP Tuaran Chief Peter Liew Fui Ken and Tamparuli branch secretary Edwin Banau inspected the Tamparuli rubbish collection centre after receiving public complaints concerning the filthy and untidy stage of the bin centre.

They were to observe that the complaints were valid and the rubbish collection bin centre is truly in a stage of highly disorder and smelly with rubbish scattered all over the area. The rubbish bins were not bin centre but placed outside under the hot sun and rain. The people just dump their rubbish outside on the ground and left to rot. The bins are full and not being disposed for quite some time.

The 4 PR states RM25 billion investments have beat the other 10 BN states attracted 53% of Malaysia's total investments of RM47.2 billion in 2010

Speech by Lim Guan Eng whilst campaigning for the PAS candidate in the Tenang By-Election on Tuesday, 25th January 2011 at 8 pm:

The 4 PR states RM25 billion investments have beat the other 10 BN states attracted 53% of Malaysia's total investments of RM47.2 billion in 2010

The 4 PR states of Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan have beat the other 10 BN states by attracting RM25 billion in investments comprising 53% of Malaysia's total investments of RM47.2 billion in 2010. For the first time in history, Penang is now the new champion of investments in Malaysia, coming out top in 2010.

Penang replaced the previous 2009 champion Sarawak by recording RM 12.2 billion in 2010 as compared to Sarawak RM3.9 billion. Penang was No. 4 in 2009 with RM 2.1 billion but shot up 5 times to No.1. On the other hand Sarawak went down from No.1 in 2009 with RM 8.5 billion to No. 4 with RM3.9 billion in 2010. Penang's success in drawing in RM12.2 billion is an extraordinary vote of confidence by both foreign and local investors in the PR state government of Penang.

The No.2 state after Penang is another PR state of Selangor with RM 10.6 billion in investments. In fact the 4 PR states of Penang, Selangor, Kedah and Kelantan combined comprise RM 25 billion investments or 53% of the total investments in Malaysia of RM47,177 million in 2010. These 4 PR states alone can beat the remainder 10 states of BN Malaysia combined!

Chinese New Year Greeting at Gaya Street

The Kota Kinabalu Member of Parliament Hiew King Cheu with the Sabah DAP leaders Edward Ewol Mujie, John Lee Kim Seng and Allen Chieng walked the Gaya Street to greet the Sunday fair hawkers and the public happy Chinese New Year on last Sunday morning.

The annual CNY greeting walk about event had brought in some New Year mode to many people especially with the sound of greeting “cong xi fatt choi”. This CNY is seen to be particularly quiet, and the New Year atmosphere is not felt by many people. Some said this is because of the slow down in the economy and most people has no mood in making a celebration and prefer to spend the CNY time quietly at home. The grand and big celebration like what we had in the past years will not be there again, claimed some people in Gaya Street.

Taman Fulliwa shoplots at Tebobon, Menggatal needed regular clean up / 孟加达多波本附近的富丽华商店需要定期清理

The Sabah DAP vice chairman Edward Ewol Mujie during his Chinese New Year visiting round to the shop lots at Taman Fulliwa at Tebobon, Menaggatal received complaint from residents and shop operators that the area here is filled with rubbish and the environment is very dirty.

After inspecting the shops area it is noticed that the DBKK did not sweep and clean the area of rubbish regularly and the rubbish bin centre is seen with rubbish spreading all over the area while the rubbish bins are placed outside the bin centre. It is not only unsightly but also unhygienic.

The people here requested more regular sweeping and make sure the rubbish bin centre is kept clean and tidy.

Edward urges the DBKK to ensure that Taman Fulliwa be provided with proper and regular cleaning service because they are rates payers like everyone else.

Explain why Malaysia topped the world in per capita illicit capital outflows, losing RM888 billion as a result of corruption and misgovernance, instead of campaign of lies and falsehoods in Tenang by-election

UMNO and MCA leaders should be explaining why Malaysia topped the world in per capita illicit capital outflows, losing RM888 billion in nine years from 2000 – 2008 as a result of corruption and misgovernance, instead of disseminating lies and falsehoods in the Tenang by-election in Johore.

It is five days since the Washington-based financial watchdog, Global Financial Integrity (GFI), reported that Malaysia is among the countries which registered the highest illicit financial outflows over a period of nine years in the last decade.

The five countries with the highest illicit financial outlays between 2000 and 2008 were:

1. China $2.18 trillion
2. Russia $427 billion
3. Mexico $416 billion
4. Saudi Arabia $302 billion
5. Malaysia $291 billion.

Capital outflows from Malaysia more than tripled from US$22.2 billion in 2000 to US$68.2 billion in 2008, totaling US$291 billion (or RM888 billion) in nine years between 2000 and 2008.

GFI warned that the massive and sharp increase of capital flight in Malaysia is “at a scale seen in few Asian countries”.

In per capita illicit outflows, Malaysia has the dubious distinction of topping the world – as seen from the following table (population figures for the other four countries based on CIA World Factbook 2010): Illicit capital outflows per head 2000-2008

China (pop 1.3b) — US$1,677
Russia (pop 140m) — US$3,007
Mexico (pop 111m) — US$3,749
Saudi Arabia (pop 28.6 m) — US$10,559
Malaysia (pop 27m) — US$10,780 (RM33,000 approx)

It is more than five days since the publication of the GFI report but there has been conspicuous silence from the government, apart from the lame excuse by the Prime Minister, Datuk Seri Najib Razak, who is also Finance Minister, passing the buck to the Bank Negara on Friday when he said that Bank Negara would provide “specific comments” on the GFI report on the RM888 billion illicit capital outflows in nine years from 2000 to 2008 because of corruption and misgovernance.

Instead of resorting to irresponsible politicking and “scare-and-fear” campaign in the Tenang by-election, Umno and MCA leaders should explain the loss of such astronomical sums which cripple national development by depriving the public coffer of tax revenues crucial for providing public goods like public security and high educational standards and drain capital needed for various investment projects, poverty alleviation and economic growth.

Sabah DAP interior mobile service team came across many rural community problems facing the rural population in the interior, among the critical problems were inadequate clean water supply, poor sanitation  conditions and the use of old, gravity flow water system that contributed to illness and disease.  They had observed that many rural folks were getting sick due to drinking unclean, unsafe, contaminated water during this critical weather conditions in the rural areas.

Dr Benjamin Yapp, Sabah DAP Parliamentary Liaison Chief for Keningau and Tenom advised the rural communities to stay healthy by drinking clean, boiled water as there were cases of rural folks getting sick with diarrheal and other infectious diseases transmitted by the faeco-oral route, particularly with the poor gravity flow water system at the rural areas such as Melalap, and Kemabong in Tenom.

Najib should personally ask the non-Muslim community if there is genuine "religious freedom" under BN's rule before proudly declaring "BN's fairness"

Media statement by Tony Pua Kiam Wee in Labis on Sunday, 23rd January 2011:

Najib should personally ask the non-Muslim community if there is genuine "religious freedom" under BN's rule before proudly declaring "BN's fairness"

Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak said the freedom of religion practised in the country proved that the government is fair to all during a Thaipusam celebration. He said "we can see today Hindu devotees celebrate the Thaipusam freely throughout the country" at the Subramaniya Swami Devasthanam Temple.

Najib must be reminded that the practice of religious freedom should not only be skin deep, where celebrations are held in the open but both written and unwritten restrictions are placed on the various religions in the country.

If Najib truly believe in the "freedom of religion", he must immediately instruct the Home Affairs Minister, Datuk Seri Hishamuddin Hussein to retract the Government's appeal against the December 2009 High Court decision to permit the use of the term "Allah" by the non-Muslim community. No such rule exists even in the predominantly Muslim Middle East, and history has shown the use of the term for centuries among Christians and Sikhs. However, the Barisan Nasional Government has chosen to unreasonably restrict the religious practices of non-Muslims resulting in the suit filed by the Catholic Church against the former.

Explain RM888b illegal funds leak

by Lim Guan Eng

DAP wishes to extend our congratulations to the Royal Malaysian Navy for its success in capturing 18 Somali pirates and preventing their attempted hijack of a Malaysian chemical tanker near the Gulf of Aden. This successful operation in saving the tanker and their crew without any loss of life inspires confidence in a professional navy that justifies the people’s faith.

Whilst our navy boys are heroes for their successful capture of Somali pirates in international waters, DAP regrets that land “pirates” are allowed to roam freely in Malaysia. The US-based financial watchdog Global Financial integrity (GFI) reported that illicit money outflows from Malaysia tripled to US$68.2 billion (RM208.1 billion) in 2008, from US$22.2 billion in 2000.

For the period 2000-2008, China tops the chart among the world’s exporters of illicit capital with a whopping US$2.8 trillion of outflows, followed by Russia (US$427 billion), Mexico (US$416 billion), Saudi Arabia (US$302 billion) and Malaysia (US$291 billion or RM888 billion). Other Asian countries with high illegal capital flight are Philippines ($109 billion), Indonesia ($104 billion) and India ($104 billion).

In general the fishing boats are not happy about the safety and security measures carried out by the government to protect them from the danger of being hijack and robbed by foreign sea bandits and robbers

Serious blockage under Menggatal Bridge

The blockage caused by the bundle of bamboo under the Menggatal Bridge along Jalan Tuaran is very serious and may caused damage to the bridge and the pipe/cable bridges across the Menggatal River.

Following the information given by the resident from Menggatal town, the KK MP Hiew King Cheu and Edward Ewol Mujie the Sabah DAP Vice chairman went to the location to inspect the blockage caused by the bundle of bamboo. It is quite serious and the bamboo is blocking the water flow and thereby causing erosion to the river bank. The high voltage electricity cable pipe bridge is already slanting to one side and might collapse into the river after another heavy rain down pour.

Malay history: What’s missing from the textbooks (2)

Malay history: What’s missing from the textbooks (2)

by John Doe | CPIASIA

Also interesting to note is the following:

In Late Yuan Dynasty, China became chaotic, people who lived along the coastal area of Fujian, under the leadership of Ong Sum Ping’s siblings, escaped to eastern Kalimantan — they landed at the river mouth. When they were exhausted, facing a shipping crisis, someone lost their arms. After that, the Kadazans named it as Sungai Kinabatangan — the place where the Chinese lost their arms.

Ong Sum Ping and his sister, and the Chinese people developed the area of Sungai Kinabatangan, and they increased their influence there. With the increase of his prosperity, the natives named him Raja, or King. The Chinese named him as ‘Chung Ping’ — meaning the General. We can clearly see that Ong Sum Ping controlled Eastern Kalimantan.

Economic philosophies at war

by Liew Chin Tong
in The Edge Financial Daily, Tuesday Jan 18, 2011

“The philosophical basis of PR’s policies is that by genuinely addressing the economic concerns of the bottom 60% of the population, the rest of the nation will be better off in a “rising tide” that lifts all boats.”

Race is a factor in political contestations in Malaysia probably ever since the birth of electoral politics in the country. But while ethnicity may still matter, debates over economic philosophies and policies will likely play a major part in deciding the outcomes of the next general election.

Two unique features distinguish the next election from the previous ones.

First, for the first time, the opposition can claim to have some experiences in government as a coalition and beyond the fringe states. Before the collapse of the Perak state government, Pakatan Rakyat (PR) coalition partners govern five states with about 60% of the country’s population.

Surviving one blow after another from a seemingly “hostile” federal government, inheriting a less than satisfactory civil service, and constrained by the lack of resources and authorities, the PR states are still alive and kicking, to say the least.

KK Taman Sri Borneo Condominium flooded during rain

The residents of the Taman Sri Borneo Condominium behind Taman Iramanis at Likas Jalan Fung Yih Ting approached the KK MP Hiew King Cheu for help regarding the flooding condition of the surrounding faced by the residents when ever it rained.

The residents will have to carry out massive cleaning operation themselves and with the help of the workers employed by the resident committee. There are mud and rubbish all over the place due to the flood water that came down from the nearby hill. They said they are tired of the cleaning work that also seems to be no end.

As we can observe, many of these damaged lamp posts scattered at the road side of Jln Kolam, Jln bundusan, Jln Penampang and many more other places.

But when a damaged lamp post left unattended on the road side, it had not only become an eye sore piece of junk on the road side but also it will endanger the safety of the road user, especially in the night time.

The death threat to Teo Nie Ching yet another despicable act of criminal intimidation upon elected representatives

Media statement by Teresa Kok Suh Sim in Shah Alam on Wednesday, 19th January 2011:

The death threat to Teo Nie Ching yet another despicable act of criminal intimidation upon elected representatives

I unreservedly condemn the despicable death threat received by Teo Nie Ching, MP for Serdang, in the form of the bloody slashed chicken and vile death threat poster stuck on the door of the DAP Sungai Chua branch this morning.

The scoundrels behind this crime display their lack of human decency and most of all, their own incapacity or refusal to discuss issues of contention in a calm, civil and rational manner.

Teo Nie Ching's experience is just the latest in a long string of cases where Opposition elected representatives have received death threats.

In August 2010, Tony Pua, MP for PJ Utara, received an M16 bullet and a death threat note.

In September 2009, a coward who used the pseudonym "hanturaya" wrote on my blog, "teresa, kau ni perlu diajar dgn darah t.kasih (sic)"

In September 2008, a molotov cocktail was thrown into my family home together with a note that said they would set my family and I on fire.

To date, the police have failed to nab the perpetrators of these death threats.

Existing KK old Custom Office need to be moved

The KK MP Hiew King Cheu proposed the existing old Custom office in front the Jesselton Point Jetty is to be moved to a more suitable location in Kota Knabalu City. This is basically due to the present office building (Wisma Kastam) is situated in a location which is no longer suitable and the area is very congested for the purpose, and it looks out of place with the activities and environment in front of the tourism point – Jesselton Point.

Chinese New Year Message from DAP Sabah Chairman YB Jimmy Wong

Chinese New Year Message from DAP Sabah Chairman YB Jimmy Wong

I am taking this opportunity to wish all Malaysians in Sabah especially our Chinese brothers and sisters a happy and prosperous Chinese New Year 2011. I am also thinking and wishing the Sino-Natives during this festival. This is the year of the rabbit which reflects on the beauty, charms, love and productivity.

Sabah is a very beautiful and charming country. It is endowed and blessed with so rich in natural resources. The future of such country depends on the ability of its people to manage the resources well. In other country that has barely any natural resources their strength depends on the ability of their people to think and find ways to enrich the country.

Collapsed section of Jalan Fung Yi Ting KK is now under construction

The KK MP Hiew King Cheu yesterday went to inspect the collapsed section of the lower portion of the Jalan Fung Yi Ting which had collapsed many months ago. This cut off the road linking Dai Yeh Villa to Taman Iramanis causing many problems for road users to reach to the other side of the hill. The people here complained to the MP and the case was brought to the attention of the DBKK and JKR.

有關加雅街咖啡店廁所的污水管因為堵塞,導致污水無法排走而溢出來,發出非常惡劣難聞的臭味many complaints from the gaya street coffee shop operators that the toilet and sewage pipes have been blocked and overflowing causing extremely unbearable smell.

In February, Kota Kinabalu will be celebrating its anniversary as a city. The city status comes with an image and responsibility on the part of City Hall. The Sunday Gaya Street Fair is one event that never loses its shine. Thousands of people including foreign tourists are converging to this fair without fail. Rain or shine the air of festivity along Gaya Street on Sunday remains vibrant. However, one of the things that dampen the people who patronised the fair is the condition of the toilets in the eateries.

Forum on poverty in Sabah

DAP Sabah organized a forum featuring poverty in Sabah as the subject and was held at New Gaya Restaurant in Inanam 0n 9th January 2011. Poverty is a household word in Sabah and is an issue which the UMNO BN government finds hard to put the lid on. Poverty itself is not an issue as it exists almost in every corners of the world. It becomes an issue when a country blessed with so abundance of natural resources is a home to many inhabitants living in poverty. Sabah used to be one of the richest States in Malaysia but today after 48 years of independence and under the UMNO BN government it has earned a distinguish status as the poorest State in Malaysia. The 9th Malaysia Plan said that Sabah is not only the poorest but had the highest number of abject poverty. This has been confirmed by the World Bank late last year.
