Gerakan ignorance “that drains are also important” //

In a recent statement, Jimmy Wong Chee Khiong of Gerakan, Political Secretary to the Ex-Chief Minister Musa Aman demonstrated his myopic views and ignorance of the real situation in Sepanggar. As opposition Member of Parliament, DAP Hiew King Cheu said he had done all he could to point out many weaknesses and failures of the BN government, and the people have the right to know.

Hiew sided an example that the drains outside the Inanam PBS office of Datuk Johnny Goh, the former assemblyman for Inanam, emitted foul smell, full of rubbish and dead wood; and on the main road the grass in the drains were overgrown and also full of rubbish. Stagnant water is a good breeding place for mosquitoes. Hiew took some photos and wrote some statements in the local newspapers and informed the authorities and DBKK. A few days later, the drains were cleared of the rubbish and overgrown grass. Does the BN government need to be reminded every time before getting to action? May be the BN YBs feel that checking on drains is a low class job and shy to walk near the dirty drains? For the DAPs, it is just the reverse, because we are doing our job for the people, no matter how low grade the job is, we serve without feeling shy or worry. So is there anything wrong with pointing out dirty, clogged and smelly drains and get these cleaned up. We do not only show you the problems with the drainage systems, but also pointing out the dirty and smelly practices within the BN government.

Hiew in fighting back said what have we got to do with keeping “promises” when we are not in the government? The only promise we can offer is just simply work hard for the people. In fact, the DAP had done a lot by keeping the people informed during their tenure as the people’s representatives by pointing out and reminding the “empty promises” of the BN government.

Wong had mentioned the issue of Kota Kinabalu Industrial Park (KKIP) in Sepanggar, the project was expected to create industrial growth in the manufacturing sector in Sabah to surpass 20% in terms of gross domestic product (GDP) contribution by 2020. Hiew said it is sad that KKIP is a burden to the state government after heavy investment from the state coffers in more than 20 years since it had been set up. So far there is no fast development to brag about. Many former landowners were badly affected until today, and many have not been properly compensated and/or resettled in the housing resettlement scheme. The promises made by the BN government did not materialize. KKIP was supposed to create job opportunities but there were hardly any job opportunities.

KKIP must take stock of the areas where improvements should be made and seriously address some of the inherent weaknesses. It has to push for a higher level of development in the industrial sector and not allow its growth to stagnate. One of the issues is the rate of land prices offered to investors. Some of the difficulties expressed by investors include access to resources they need for the production processes. There is also logistics constraints related to shipping costs and time as well as the need for improvement in infrastructure development.

The investors in KKIP are unable to access raw materials at competitive prices for the production process. There is a shortage of natural gas supply to cater for the industrial needs. The high freight costs, longer shipping time, poor port services have contributed to the delays in business transactions and hampering investments.

So it is very obvious that Jimmy Wong Chee Khiong is oblivious of all these and wanted to just blow his hot air without first making some research. This is the very problem with several BN government political appointees who just sits in the air-conditioned office and who never “walk the talk”. The people of Sabah feel the need to change the managers in the 13th General Elections.
